What is Zi Wei Dou Shu 紫微斗数 ?

Zi Wei literally translated as the “Purple Emperor” and Zi Wei is the most auspicious star in the chart. Dou means stars. Shu means numerology. Zi Wei Dou Shu is a Chinese metaphysics that has been regard as number one divination because of its amazing detail in studying a person’s life which base on the movement and location of the Zi Wei Star and other hundred stars. Zi Wei Dou Shu is almost the same with Four Pillars of Destiny in terms of using the date and hour of birth in the forecasting a person’s life.

With this birth data, we can chart the journey of life of a person into 12 (twelve) different palaces of life which represents a 10 years luck cycle. On each of these palaces, various stars move in and out. The 12 palaces are as follow: life palace, sibling palace, spouse palace, children palace, wealth palace, illness palace, travelling palace, servant palace, career palace, property palace, blessing palace and parent palace. Each of these palaces will be filled by a star according to the date of birth. From the nature of star, we can study how the person’s life journey is. Zi Wei Dou Shu utilizes the concept of palaces, the stars, five elements, Heavenly Stems, Earthly Branches and luck pillars. The plotting is not so difficult, but what is difficult is how you interpret the blueprint of the person’s life.

12 Palaces 十二宫 [Shi Er Gong]

The 12 palaces are arranged in anti-clockwise direction in this fixed sequence as below:

  1. Life Palace 命宫 [Ming Gong] – we can call this as the main palace of the chart because it shows the general outlook or characteristic, inborn qualities, and basic character of a person. This chart shows a person first luck cycle.
 
2. Siblings Palace 兄弟宫 [Xiong Di Gong] – we can learn the siblings luck and the relationship between siblings with a person. You can also learn whether this person can do well in business with his/her siblings as his/her partner.
 
3. Spouse Palace 夫妻宫 [Fu Qi Gong] – we can learn how the successful a person marriage life will be and a person’s sexual concept. From this palace, you can also learn why some people get marry many times, while others stay single in their whole life.
 
4. Children Palace 子女宫 [Zi Nv Gong] – we can learn the children luck and the relationship between the parent and the children. You can learn also whether this person’s children will be rebellious or obedient.
 
5. Wealth Palace 财昂宫 [Cai Ang Gong] – we can learn how a person amass and stores his/her money (whether this person have to work hard or have windfall fortune). You will learn also how this person should use his/her money from this palace.
 
6. Illness Palace 疾厄宮 [Ji E Gong] – we can learn which the weakness point and the state of health physically or mentally of a person. In certain instances, you can indicate whether this person is prone to fatal accidents.
 
7. Travelling Palace 迁移宫 [Qian Yi Gong] – we can learn whether this person should stay in his/her hometown or travel far away for his/her career. From this palace, you can also learn about how a person social life is.
 
8. Servant Palace 仆役宫 [Pu Yi Gong] – we can learn the relationship between a person and his/her friends and also relationship with his/her inferior whether they will betray or loyal. You can also determine whether this person business partner is good or bad.
 
9. Career Palace 官禄宫 [Guan Lu Gong] – we can learn how a person career will be whether he/she suit working for others or set up his/her own business.
 
10. Property Palace 田宅宫 [Tian Zhai Gong] – we can learn how the quality of the property of this person own, when the house is being renovated, and when the person moves to other house.
 
11. Luck Palace 福德宫 [Fu De Gong] – we can learn how the person spiritual is and whether the source of wealth is more or less. From here, we can describe how this person mental state of happiness.
 
12. Parents Palace 父母宫 [Fu Mu Gong] – we can learn the parent characteristics and the relationship of a person with his/her parent or superior. You can learn from this palace about your parents’ good or bad luck.

All these palaces have relationship with each other, and we can’t just conclude only by just looking at one palace, like for example, when the luck palace is weak (which means the source of wealth is weak) but the wealth palace is good, that means the money is hard to find.

From Zi Wei Dou Shu, we can interpret:

   * Information about soul mate
   * Information about your parents
   * Lucky era of your life
   * Information about your career
   * Position of birth in the family
   * And so many other things

Zi Wei Dou Shu uses stars and deities to depict the quality of each palace.

There are 14 major stars in Zi Wei Dou Shu as follow:

   * Emperor Star 紫微 [Zi Wei]
   * Mercy Star 天機 [Tian Ji]
   * Sun 太陽 [Tai Yang]
   * Finance Star 武曲 [Wu Qu]
   * Lucky Star 天同 [Tian Tong]
   * Wicked Star 廉貞 [Lian Zhen]
   * Treasury Star 天府 [Tian Fu]
   * Moon 太陰 [Tai Yin]
   * Flirting Star 貪狼[Tan Lang]
   * Gloomy Star 巨門[Ju Men]
   * Minister Star 天相 [Tian Xiang]
   * Blessing Star 天樑 [Tian Liang]
   * Power Star 七殺 [Qi Sha]
   * Ruinous Star 破軍[Po Jun]

There are 6 fortunate stars as follow:

   * Deputy 1 左輔 [Zuo Fu]
   * Deputy 2 右弼 [You Bi]

   * Angel 2 天鉞 [Tian Yue]
   * Intellect Star 文昌 [Wen Chang]

Please do remember in your mind that Zi Wei Dou Shu is just a rough guide of what events will come in the future and what decision you should take by learning from the weakness and the strength that you get from this chart. The Chinese believe that a person’s life is not pre-determined which means in a certain degree of freedom he/she can choose his/her path of life. That is why this subject is not a superstitious.

Zi Wei Dou Shu Introduction


ZI WEI DOU SHU is another branch of chinese astrology. Unlike the Four Pillars of Destiny, Zi Wei Dou Shu uses the Chinese Lunar Calendar. A Zi Wei Dou Shu chart is divided into 12 palaces representing the 12 chinese earthly animals. Each palace corresponds to a category of our life. Each of these palaces is governed by major and minor stars. These stars have their own characteristics that affect the palace they are in. In all, there are 113 stars. Of those 14 are major stars, 4 transformed stars, 95 are minor stars. Of the 95 minor stars, 18 are important minor stars.


The 12 Palaces/Categories are in the following order:

  1. Life Palace
This is the most important palace. This palace represents the personality or character of a person. It tells the person's destiny.

  2. Parents Palace
This represents our parents and our family backgrounds.

  3. Happiness Palace
This represents the moral, spiritual, emotional aspects of a person. This tells us whether a person will live peacefully or not.

  4. Property Palace
This represents the property, inheritance, investments a person will own.

  5. Career Palace
This represents the type of career that is most suitable for a person. It also determines the amount of success you can expect from your chosen career.

  6. Friends Palace
This represents the kind of peers, colleagues a person will have whether they will be helpful or not. It also represents the relationship you have with your friends.

  7. Travel Palace
This represents whether you will need to relocate to achieve success. It can also predict a traffic accident.

  8. Health Palace
This represents your health condition such as the kinds of diseases you'll likely to encounter.

  9. Wealth Palace
This represents your financial income whether a person will have steady income, or encounter losses. This also tells whether income is from hard work or not.

 10. Children Palace
This represents whether a person will have children or not; whether the children are good or not; whether the children will be rich or not. This also represents the relationship a person will have with his/her children. This also represents nieces and nephews.

 11. Spouse or Marriage Palace
This represents the character of the spouse and relationship with spouse. This palace can also predict whether marriage will end in divorce; whether there will be affairs.

 12. Siblings Palace
This represents the relationship between brothers and sisters. It also tells the characters of brothers/sisters.


# The earthly animals in the chart have fixed locations while the location of the 12 palaces discussed above depends upon the date of birth of the person. Thus, the Life Palace could be in the Tiger square or Horse square or in any other squares.


A palace is affected or is most influenced by the adjacent palaces, the opposite palace and the related harmony palaces.

Looking at the chart above, we can say that the Life Palace is influenced by:
# the adjacent palaces (Parents and Siblings Palaces)
# the opposite palace (Travel Palace)
# the related harmony palace (Career and Wealth Palaces)

Do you not agree that the life of a person is shaped by the person's parents and siblings? The way you are brought up by your parents will determine how you become in society. This will lead to the type of career you will pursue and whether the chosen career will lead to generating your income be it stable income or not or whether you need to move away from your birthplace to make a living.

When there are no major stars in a palace that's being analyzed, the major stars in the opposite palace is then examined as if the stars there are actually in the palace being analyzed. This is because the opposite palace is like a mirror image of the palace being analyzed. These two palaces have the strongest influenced on each other.

If you are analyzing the Happiness Palace, the palaces that have influenced to it are the Wealth Palace (opposite), the Marriage and Travel palaces(related harmony), the Property and Parents palace (adjacent).

People's luck change as time goes by. Some enjoy several years of good luck. Some suffer bad luck year after year. This is because the palaces rotate around the chart.

Like the four pillars of destiny, a person has 10 year luck chart and annual luck chart. A person's first 10 year luck chart is the same as the original natal chart. The second 10 year luck chart has the Life Palace either occupying the Parents Palace or Siblings Palace depending upon the polarity of the person (yin male/female or yang male/female). The other palaces move one place following the Life Palace. This rotation in the chart causes our luck to change.

La position de Pegase(cheval) est donné par la branche année, donc ici soit an Tigre,Cheval,Chien
L'énergie Red Phoenix(cordon rouge) branche année Chien parmi les 3 précités
J'ai cherché la place de Plentiful(Trésor) en singe qui indique le tronc céleste année en Canh Metal+ Donc année 1970 ! Énergie résultante nayin (élément destinée) Métal des bijoux, non pris en compte sur l'exemple simplifié, mais qui a un effet global faciliteur ou de contrainte sur chaque énergie de la carte
Ensuite, j'ai vu Left assitant(Aide de gauche) en cochon, énergie du mois avec Right assistant(Aide de droite) qui donne la 8 lune Coq
La position de Bad Luck(Sort de terre) en tigre, et Dissaster(Nullité) en singe indique heure du Coq

Pour le secteur personnalité, compter à partir de la case du tigre, + mois 8 Coq - heure 10 Coq. Cela confirme bien la position de Personnalité en case du Rat.
On peut noter aussi que cette étude est faite avec la méthode chinoise et pas vietnamienne. Donc B/C et B/N ne sont pas utilisé ici et positions de Fiery(Mars), Ringing(Tonnerre) qui peuvent être différente.
Pour les 14 étoiles principales, on à la configuration 6a qui donne l'inter-dépendance particulière de ceux ci pour ce thème.
Les dates possibles semblent donc être le 10-09-1970, ou le 24,29 du même mois. Et pour l'heure la 10ème en Coq.

On voir donc ici en apparence le même thème pour ces 3 dates, cependant outre quelques énergies mineurs placé par le jour, on a surtout le changement du "secteur naissance"(unité décénnie) qui sera différents au trois date et influencerait de façon globale toute les énergies.
En rappel cette étude simplifiée ne contient que les astres principaux, suffisant pour avoir une idée de la personne. On pourra ensuite pour affiner le thème regarder les 111 énergies !

The Life Palace contains the:

. . Lucky star which is bright in the Rat place. Generally, persons with this star in Life Palace are said to be easy-going and opportunities always come their way without hard work.

The Moon star being a wealth star combines with the Lucky star means that money is easy to make especially if you travel overseas. This is specially true if the person was born in the evening or at night as the moon shines bright at night. In addition, persons who have the Moon star in the Life Palace are said to be pretty.

We can also examine the related palaces to tell us more about the person. The Blessing star
indicates that the person is always willing to help take care of younger siblings.

Lucky star (Serviteur) qui est prometteur dans le lieu Rat. En général, les personnes avec cette étoile dans la vie du Palais ne sont, dit-on facile à vivre et des possibilités viennent toujours leur chemin sans le dur labeur. L'étoile (Lune) étant une étoile de richesse se combine avec la bonne étoile signifie que l'argent est facile à faire, surtout si vous Voyage outre-mer. Ceci est spécialement vrai si la personne est née dans la soirée ou la nuit que la lune brille dans la nuit. En outre, les personnes qui ont l'étoile Moon (lune) dans le Palais de la vie sont dits être jolie. The Marriage Palace contains the:

. . Fiery star which is a minor star. This star is temperemental. We borrow the major star opposite this palace to give us in-depth understanding of the marriage palace.

We then take the Mercy and Gracious stars. The Mercy star being the star of action is not a stable star and not good to be in the marriage palace. This signifies an unstable marriage. The Gracious star in the marriage palace signifies that there is obstruction in the beginning. It would be good if any differences are resolved prior to marriage. The Gracious star also indicates that the person will marry someone much older or a year younger than him/her.

Should the Lucky and Gracious stars be in the Marriage Palace together or opposite each other, divorce is likely.

Fiery (Mars) qui est une étoile mineures. Cette étoile est temperemental. Nous empruntons les grandes étoile en face de ce palais pour nous donner une compréhension approfondie du palais mariage. . . Mercy star which is quick thinking and changes in jobs. It also means the person is good at calculation. With the Gracious star, the person can work in large businesses dealing with changing clients to counter the instability of the Mercy star. Computer networking career is also suitable.

Mercy (Moteur) étoiles qui est la pensée rapide et les changements d'emplois. Cela signifie aussi que la personne est bonne dans les calculs. The Children Palace contains the:

. . Destructive, Wicked, Trouble stars could indicate that the person will suffer miscarriage or premature birth of child. This could also mean that children will not get along with each other. This could also signify that the relationship with children is not good.

Destructrive(Démolisseur), Wicked(Vierge), Trouble(lance?) étoiles pourrait indiquer que la personne souffrira fausse couche ou une naissance prématurée de l'enfant. Cela pourrait également signifier que les enfants ne vont pas bien s'entendre entre eux. Cela pourrait également signifier que les rapports avec l'enfant n'est pas bon.

The Health Palace contains the:

. . Heavenly Guardian I and Anxiety stars which are minor stars. This signifies a person who is pretty much healthy. However, the person needs to avoid sweets or foods containing too much sugar. The Prime Minister star in the related harmony palace (Property Palace) has a rating of "dark."

This star is represented by urinary bladder and diabetes problems.

Heavenly Guardian (?) et les étoiles anxiété (?) qui sont des étoiles mineures. Cela signifie une personne qui est à peu près en bonne santé. Analysing Spousal Relationships Using Zi Wei Dou Shu (ZWDS)

In my course of practising Chinese Astrology, one of the most common questions being asked is what I can foresee about their marriage now and in the future. As a marriage has far reaching effects for many parties directly or indirectly involved, I hope readers will take this opportunity to learn some broad ways of assessing the potentials of their own marriage.
In Zi Wei Dou Shu (ZWDS), there are 12 palaces governing the state of affairs of an individual's life. They are Life Palace, Siblings' Palace, Spouse's Palace, Children's Palace, Wealth Palace, Health Palace, Travel Palace, Friends' Palace, Career Palace, Estate Palace, Blessings Palace and Parents' Palace. On top of these 12 Palaces, there are 108 stars that can fall into one of these palaces and we can get a good assessment of the state of affairs of each palace by looking at the stars in each palace and the elemental nature of each palace. The elemental nature of each palace is depicted by the 12 Earthly Branches or more commonly known as the 12 Chinese Zodiac animals of Rat, Ox, Tiger, Rabbit, Dragon, Snake, Horse, Goat, Monkey, Rooster, Dog and Pig.

Dans mon cours de l'exercice d'astrologie chinoise, l'une des questions les plus fréquemment posée est ce que je prévois de leur mariage maintenant et dans l'avenir. Comme un mariage a des conséquences profondes pour de nombreuses parties directement ou indirectement impliqués, j'espère que les lecteurs profiteront de cette occasion pour apprendre certains égards large de l'évaluation des potentiels de leur propre mariage. La nature élémentaire de chaque palais est représenté par les 12 branches terrestres ou plus communément connu sous le nom des 12 animaux du zodiaque chinois du rat, bœuf, tigre, lapin, dragon, serpent, cheval, chèvre, singe, coq, chien et le cochon.

As our subject of interest is marriage, the palace of interest will be the Spouse's Palace. The first step is to look at which of the 12 Earthly Branches the Spouse Palace lands on. Of the 12 Earthly Branches, we can group them into the 4 Horses (Tiger, Monkey, Snake and Pig), 4 Storage (Dragon, Dog, Ox and Goat) and 4 Cardinals (Rat, Horse, Rabbit and Rooster). If the Spouse Palace falls into the ground of one of the 4 Horses, it is likely to be unstable as Horses represents movements. If the Spouse Palace is located in one of the ground of the 4 Storage, relationship will be less overt or more secretive as the name "Storage" lends suggestion to. As for situation when Spouse Palace falls onto the ground of the 4 Cardinals, it will appear hunky dory as cardinals are also known for high romance and attractiveness index in Chinese Metaphysics. However, whether the Spousal relationship is good remains inconclusive as if the spouse is too attractive, it may also bring about negative attraction from other members of the opposite sex.

Comme notre sujet d'intérêt est le mariage, le palais d'intérêt sera le Palais du conjoint. La première étape consiste à examiner au cours de laquelle des 12 branches terrestres des terres Conjoint Palais de suite. The second step would be to look the the main Zi Wei Dou Shu Stars residing in the Spouse Palace:If the star is Tian Xiang (Seal Minister), the relationship with the spouse is good as there is rapport and communication during courtship. The spouse that one marries will be helpful and understanding as Tian Xiang is a gentle star.

La deuxième étape consisterait à examiner l'ensemble les Zi Wei Dou Shu Etoiles résidant dans le Palais Conjoint: Si l'étoile est Tian Xiang (Seal ministre), la relation avec le conjoint est bon car il ya une relation et la communication pendant le flirt. Le conjoint qui on épouse sera utile et la compréhension que Tian Xiang est une étoile en douceur.

If the star is Tian Ji (Heavenly Advisor) or Tian Tong (The Hedonist) or Tian Liang (Heavenly Beam) or Tai Yang (The Sun) / Tai Yin (The Moon) the relationship is likely to be amicable.
This is because the Tian Ji is kind and intelligent, Tian Tong is easy going while Tian Liang is someone that looks after the well-being of those people around them. However as these 3 stars are prone to changes,
this will mean the spouse may throw up some surprising decisions along the way that may bring some instability to the marriage. For those with The Sun or The Moon in the Spouse's Palace, there is a chance their spouse will be significantly older than themselves as The Sun represents a senior male while The Moon represents a senior female. As such, I have listed down a few major categories of stars combination in each ZWDS chart Friends' Palace for easy assessment by people who are not well skilled in ZWDS reading.

Health & Afflictions Determination Using Zi Wei Dou Shu (ZWDS)

In my previous article, I touched upon determination of health problems and afflictions using the Chinese Astrology method Bazi (also known as 4 Pillars). To do a more holistic assessment, we can also
complement it by employing another Chinese Astrology method called Zi Wei Dou Shu (ZWDS).We can start off by assessing the stars in the Health Palace. But it is not a necessity because one's decade luck
moves every 10 years and the decade Health Palace could be any one of the palace in the Zi Wei Dou Shu chart. In addition, sometimes it is triggered by stars clashing the Health Palace instead. To understand how stars can clash Health Palace and how decade Health Palace moves, readers may visit my blog or forum to read and ask.
