ABSTRACT

The Chinese calendar, commonly known as the Farmers’ Calendar, or the Hsia Calendar, is a fascinatingly accurate system, which not only records the passage of time, but is also a tool for fortune-telling. The famous traditional fortune-telling system – The Four Pillars of Destiny – is exactly referring to reading a person’s destiny from his birth data as presented in the Hsia calendar format.  The unique feature of such calendar is that all information about time – year, month, day and hour are presented in terms of the five basic elements – metal, water, wood, fire and earth, which are believed to be the basic components of everything in the Universe. The relationship between the five elements accurately helps one predict what is to come by way of one’s fortunes and thus, one can by using this knowledge, multiply the good luck or minimize the bad luck in one’s life.
 

THE YEAR OF THE RABBIT

The Year of the Rabbit, 2023, in the Hsia calendar, is symbolized by two Chinese characters – with Yin Water sitting on top of Rabbit which is Wood element.  So it is a water year with Earthly branch wood being supported by Heavenly stem water on top.  According to the cycle of birth and destruction, which governs the inter-relationship between the elements, if the two elements are in the birth cycle and have supportive relationship, then the year will have more harmony. This happened in the previous year of 2018 earth over earth.  In 2018, the U.S.A. made peace with North Korea.  But in  2019 when the elements are Earth conquers Water,  the two elements are in destructive cycle, then the peace talk between U.S.A and North Korea broke down, and there is intensified hostility between U.S.A and Iran. The previous 2 years 2020 2021 metal sitting on water rat and metal sitting on earth Ox, even though both years elements are on birth cycle, there were  relatively more tension between East West relationship as the nature of metal elements are related to weapon and war.  2022 is water over wood, same as 2023, but it was not peaceful with war between Russia and Ukraine, this is because of the nature of Yang Water Tiger are aggressive elements.

The 2023 water wood elements configuration in supportive cycle will help to resolve  conflict and bring more harmony in international relationship. The main difference between 2022 and 2023 is that Yin water is by nature the “morning dew” and the Rabbit is by nature a flower. It is a picture of the small drop of water appears on the petal of a flower in the early morning, so it is more moderate and peaceful. And we can expect the conflict between Russia and Ukraine will end bringing more peaceful atmosphere and there is less tension between East and West. However, it does not mean conflict and war will totally disappear. Only that the fight may turn underground and secretive.  As such there will be assassinations, coup d’etat, protests and terrorist activities. The most famous assassination in history is the murder of President John Kennedy 60 years ago in 1963 which is also year of Yin water Rabbit.  


Yin water is the most moderate and humble kind out of the 5 elements system.

 A person born on a Yin Water day often appears to be polite, patient, humble and tolerant, accommodating but very intelligent.  they are moderate on the outside but persistent and full of will power and strength inside.     They normally behave friendly and easy going, however, water is by nature powerful and intelligent element, so yin water people are often clever and possess strong enthusiasm, devotion and will power and can take dedicated actions to meet targets and accomplish their goals.  Usually they can listen and accommodate other’s opinion as they do not like to argue or quarrel.  With the apparent moderate character of yin water, there is less war and open fighting like what happened in 2022, but there will still be protests and tension in the under current and there will be assassination, coup d’état,  and terrorist activities.    The Chinese calendar is on 60 years cycle which means we have the same yin water Rabbit year 60 years ago in 1963.   It was the year when the danger of developing nuclear weapons was recognized and in August 1963, the USA, UK and Soviet Union signed the Partial Nuclear Test Ban Treaty.

In USA, Martin Luther King Jr. delivered his “I have a dream” speech in August during a massive march on Washington for Jobs and Freedom.  However, the political situation in South Vietnam is worsening, with Buddhist monk committed self -immolation to protest against the Ngo Dinh Diem government, this event eventually led to a coup in November resulted in assassination of the South Vietnam President Ngo Dinh Diem, and another coup occurred in Jan 1964.  There was also coup in Honduras in October and in Dominican Republic in September.


Of course the most significant political event in 1963 is the assassination of President John F. Kenndey on 22/11/1963  in Dallas, Texas.   And the murder suspect Lee Harvey Oswald was also assassinated two days later by Jack Ruby.                


  The Rabbit  is pure spring wood element. It is described as a leaf or flower so it is not able to generate much fire like the Tiger wood, as such the year 2023 is pure water and wood and there is total absence of fire element like the previous years 2020 and 2021.  As fire is symbol of happiness and positive energy in Chinese 5 element system, fire element is necessary to stimulate economic activities.  When fire is totally absent,  there will be less confidence and less drive for investment activities.  These may lead to pessimism in the economy and set back in the stock market.   The economic recovery which we experienced in 2022 may slow down. Such absence of fire will continue into 2024.  As real fire element will not return before 2025 year of Snake, it will not be surprising that a more significant setback in stock market may appear in the autumn and winter season of 2023.  The real economic recovery can only arrive by 2025 year of wood snake.      


Yin Water symbolize humble, moderate drop of water. It is also representing intelligence, flexibility, accommodating, and considerate thinking.    As such, it is associate with clever compromising solution to difference and innovative, creative ideas.       A typical yin water person is Zhuge Liang of the Three Kingdoms born in 181 AD.  He is considered to be the most intelligent war strategist who won the battle of the Red Cliff with very innovative plots.

 The Rabbit is considered a “Peach Blossom” or “Flower or Romance” which will stimulate entertainment, art, beauty and other romantic business.  Yin water sitting on Rabbit is also “nobleman and academic star”. This means all babies born in 2023 will have support of nobleman in year pillar and also possess intellectual and innovative quality.  Year pillar represents senior people and ancestral influence. Such quality with both nobleman and academic star is not so common as there are only two years out of 60 year cycle – yin fire rooster and yin water rabbit years will have such unique stars.  Take for example – Jet Li was born in 1963 Yin water rabbit year so he possessed nobleman and academic star in the year pillar.  Therefore, since childhood he got intensive coaching and became national champion of martial arts and later on he is international big Kung Fu Star. Peach Blossom will bring sex and romance, particularly for people born in year of Tiger, Horse, Dog or born on day of Tiger, Horse, Dog. It will stimulate activities such as entertainment, movie, singing, art, beauty.  With Rabbit also an Academic star, there will also be booming of cultural developments.  Back in 1963, it was the year when pop culture started to flourish with Beatlemania. Their first album “Please Please Me” was released in the UK in March 1963 with big hit “I want to hold your hand” released in the USA in December.  Bob Dylan also released his most famous song “Blowing in the Wind” in May. It is also the year the expensive movie Cleopatra was shown in June, and “Lawrence of Arabia” won best picture in the 35th Academy Awards..

Air travel is a business of the fire element. As fire is totally absent in 2023, this may be a factor contributing to air traffic disasters. Back in 1963, there were plenty of serious air crashes. On 12/2 a Northwest Airlines Flight 705 crashed in Florida killing 43 people. On 8/11 Finnair aircraft crashed in Aland airport before landing. Trans Canada air Lines Flight 831 crashed near Montreal killing 118 people. On 8/12 a lightning strike caused crash of Pan Am flight 214 in Maryland, USA, killing 81 people.


As it is water and wood year, the earth element becomes relatively weak. So there can be more earth disasters.  Looking back in history, there are also  serious earth disasters back in 1963.   Just pick some significant examples from the previous water rabbit year 60 years ago in 1963 on 21/2 there is 5.6 magnitude earthquake in Northern Libya with over 300 deaths and 500 injuries. In March, there was volcanic eruption in Bali killed 1500 people. In July an earthquake in Yugoslavia killed 1800 people. On 9/10 over 2000 people died in a landslide disaster in North Italy.  A coal mine explosion occurred in Japan killed 458 people on 9/11. –.  


In the system of Four Pillars of Destiny, the Rabbit is in clash against the Rooster and in penalty relationship with the Rat.  The clash is between small metal and small wood, as if a metal dagger cuts into the bones.  As such, for people who are having rooster in their Four Pillars, it is easier to suffer from injury to the small bones particularly in the limbs. The Rabbit is yin wood which also symbolize our neck and back bones. So when there is clash between Rooster and Rabbit, it is easy to suffer from back bone and neck problems. There had been many examples indicating such clash will cause breaking back accidents. Take for example, the famous Hong Kong rock singer Wong Ka Kui died in 1993 because of clash between his Rabbit and the Rooster year causing injury to his back bone. As there is total absence of fire element this year, and the yin water will clash against yin fire, we also have to be careful about sickness related to the heart and the brain or nerve system. Yin fire represents the heart, the brain, the eyes. The former Soviet leader Boris Yeltsin is weak yin fire person, so he suffered from heart disease and died of heart problem. To minimize such clash, the traditional cure is to carry pendant of a Dog. As the dog is good friend of the Rabbit and carrying the dog will attract away the clash aspect.


In 2023, some celebrities have Rooster either in the year or on the day and in clash against the Rabbit year. Such clash will often bring changes and turbulence or even injuries and accidents. Examples are Eric Clapton, Meghan Markle, Emperor Akihito, Serena Williams, Paris Hilton, Natalie Portman, Ivanka Trump, Fang Bing Bing, Britney Spears….they are born in year of Rooster . Others like Jodie Foster, Princess Camilla, Matt Damon, Mick Jagger, Jamie Oliver, Kevin Spacey…they are born on a Rooster day. The clash between Rabbit year and Rooster day are equally serious as the day animal is called “House of Spouse” and such clash will cause trouble in relationship area. Such people should carry pendant of Dog and should refrain from vigorous sports or risky business during 2023.


In the five elements system, fire is happiness and optimism which prevailed in the previous years of fire from 2013 to 2017. However when the year of Dog 2018 arrived, the fire enters the grave hence it brings pessimism and caused setback in the economic atmosphere. The Pig year 2019 represents the termination of fire element and the return of water element which symbolizes fear. Hence the world economy is very much affected by the Trade war talks between USA and China which generated a lot of uncertainty for investors. Coming to the year of the Rat 2020, it is the most powerful water element and fire is totally absent. Such fearful water element brought the global disaster of COVID-19 which cast the dark shadow of fear all over the world. 2021 the year of metal ox continue to be under strong water influence and the atmosphere was dull, cold and grey. The Tiger year 2022 brought the wood which is the seed of fire. Hence some positive optimism returned and there had been some recovery to the economy with international travelling and entertainment resumed in many countries after 2 gloomy years. However, the fire element is still not apparent so this is not a genuine permanent recovery. By August when autumn season arrives, the fire and wood elements are getting weak and the economy experience setback again. 2023 water Rabbit year is pure wood and water and the fire element is totally absent. So the sign of economic recovery appearing in mid 2022 cannot sustain and growth will slow down towards second half of 2023. It will not be surprising that the over all economic atmosphere and the stock market will become gloomy and bearish again in the autumn season. The real recovery with powerful fire element will only return by the year of Snake in 2025.

In Traditional Chinese medicine,  wood element represents the liver. It is also responsible for growth and activities and motion of our limbs.  So there is tendency for people to be more keen to move around and do exercise and sports.  The water element on top is related to kidney, Urinary system and sex organs.  However, such water sitting on wood is weak, so it is still necessary to take supplements such as Omega 3 oil to support the water aspects. Both water and wood  are against earth, which is our stomach and digestion system, and the clash between yin water and yin fire is sign of heart attack and stroke.  So it is also good to take fire supplements such as COQ10 to support earth, fire to improve on blood circulation and body energy,  and take more anti oxidants to regulate our earth element which also refers to our cells.


Yin water attacks yin fire which is the brain and nerve system. This will bring more hyper tension and mental disorder which may also mean ghosts and psychic killings.

As fire element -r representing blood circulation and energy is often associate with gaining weight, the absence of fire element in 2023 also provides a good chance to lose weight, and there will more popularity in healthy diet. Back in 1963 Coca Cola also introduced its first diet drink in May.


Yin water sitting on Rabbit is described as Academic star in the system of Four Pillars of Destiny.  Academic star is symbol of intelligence and intellectual ability.  People who possess such star in their birth chart may not get high grades at school but they are keen to explore and absorb knowledge of their interest, hence they will be successful in the field where they enjoyed and find interest.  Such people include Albert Einstein, Mark Zuckerberg, Beethoven, Vincent Van Gogh, Stephen King…….So all babies born in 2023 automatically possesses academic star Rabbit in their birth year.  This is particularly beneficial quality in the modern world when high tech business base on knowledge is of paramount importance.

People who are born in the year of  Rabbit are offending the year,  People born in year of Rooster is in clash against the year.  They usually have more movements and travelling in 2023, it is ok to take such chance to make necessary changes such as moving house, moving office, or changing job or taking trips.  However they should take extra care and refrain from risky sports such as driving fast cars, driving airplane, skin diving, parachuting etc.   It is recommended that they carry the pendant of a Dog which will help to attract away the Rabbit, so as to minimize the negative influence of the clash.  For people born in year of the Rooster, it is good to minimize travelling direct towards the east direction as it is the direction of the Grand Duke in 2023.

With the arrival of “Age of 9” in 2024, there are more attention on the development of metaverse business which includes cryptocurrency and NFT…such activities are of speculative nature and the market behavior is similar to the stock market. As such, its price level also fluctuates with confidence like the stock market. Therefore, fire element is essential for its prosperity. As fire is totally absent in 2023, the enthusiasm to invest in metaverse business and cryptocurrency may be cooling down towards second half of 2023 like the stock market.


In general, the Yin Water Rabbit year, with yin water on top and wood Rabbit below, is symbol of creativity and growth but also calming down and the atmosphere will be cooling and cautious, recovery from the dormant atmosphere of 2020 and 2021 will be slow. However, as the impact of COVID-19 pandemic brought about by the massive water elements of 2020 and 2021 are receding and world is turning back to normal life, there will be more joyful sentiments bringing back entertainment and travelling, wedding celebration, musical concerts, business and cultural events….etc. There are still international tension and social unrest as people are in liberal mood and more desire to make changes. As the yin water clashes against yin fire, this may stimulate fire disasters. In 1963 there had been big forest fire in Brazil broke out in August destroyed almost 5 million acres of forest and 110 people died in the fire. In October, there was gas explosion accident in Indiana killed 81 people. And there was fire accident in an Ohio Nursing Home kill 63 elderly people.


The Rabbit year is Nobleman year for people born in water year or water day. These are years ending with 2 and 3. Such as 1952, 1962, 1972, 1982, 1992 and 1953, 1963, 1973, 1983, 1993….etc. Nobleman means angel coming from Heaven to provide rescue and support and such Nobleman often bring solution to troubles and making the year more comfortable and smooth. People who are having Nobleman in 2023 can take the chance to make progress and develop new projects and make good friends and partnership.

People who have yin fire in their birth year or day will be under clash against the yin water in 2023. These may cause problem with heart, eye sight or brain. Example of famous people with Yin Fire are Stephen King, Princess Camilla and Robert Plant…

Feng Shui energies also change from year to year. Therefore, it is necessary to watch out for the re-allocation of good and bad energies at the beginning of each year, so that we can take necessary precautions if some bad energy happens to arrive at important locations of our residence or offices. In the year of the Rabbit, the bad energy called “Five Yellow” – symbolizing obstacles and misfortune, arrives at the Northwest. It is recommended that one hangs a metal wind chime in the Northwest of the house to dissolve this bad energy. The worst months will be in June, August and September 2023.

Also the bad star 7, representing scandals is in the northeast, the traditional solution for this bad star 7 is to place 3 piece of bamboo plant grown in clear glass vase of water in the Northeast  location.


The year 2023 could be significant year as there are ancient prophecy predicting there will be big changes in China when the “Black Rabbit enters Green Dragon’s Den”. This is written in the mystery prophecy book of the Tang Dynasty – “Pushing Back Pictures”.  And 2023 is Water Rabbit year which is the “Black Rabbit” as water is black color. 2024 is wood dragon year which is the Green Dragon.  So some significant event will happen in China between 2023 and 2024.   Also ancient Chinese scholars believe in the saying of “Red Goat disaster” – years of Fire Horse and Fire Goat  bringing disaster and turbulence.  The Red Horse year and Red Goat year will be fire horse and  fire goat years 2026 and 2027.  Back in the year 1126 a year of Red Horse, the Sung Dynasty was invaded by Jin and the Sung Emperors were captured and held hostage by barbarians. Also 1966 the year of Red Horse was the beginning of Cultural Revolution….
